Check out this story from the SacBee.

"The open houses and meetings will be Oct. 1 at the Nevada City Elks Lodge, 518 Highway 49 North; Oct. 3, Sierraville Ranger Station, 317 S. Lincoln Highway (Highway 89); Oct. 7, Resort at Squaw Creek, 400 Squaw Creek Road, Olympic Valley; and Oct. 9, Ridge Golf Course, 2020 Golf Course Way, Auburn. "

Draft plan due for allowing motorized travel in forest

Published 12:00 am PDT Friday, September 19, 2008

A draft environmental impact statement for a revamped road and trail system for motorized travel in Tahoe National Forest is expected to be released Sept. 26.

Open houses and orientation meetings are scheduled next month in Nevada City, Sierraville, Olympic Valley (for the Truckee/Tahoe area) and Auburn.

Large-scale maps and various displays will be available at the open houses from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and visitors will be able to talk with planning team members.

At the orientation meetings to follow from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., an overview of the travel management plan and draft EIS will be presented.

The open houses and meetings will be Oct. 1 at the Nevada City Elks Lodge, 518 Highway 49 North; Oct. 3, Sierraville Ranger Station, 317 S. Lincoln Highway (Highway 89); Oct. 7, Resort at Squaw Creek, 400 Squaw Creek Road, Olympic Valley; and Oct. 9, Ridge Golf Course, 2020 Golf Course Way, Auburn.

The environmental statement looks at which unauthorized trails, if any, will become part of the established route system; whether motorized cross-country travel should be prohibited; and whether changes are needed in the seasons of use or in the types of vehicles using the routes.

"We recognize this is a passionate topic, but hope we can all share in a constructive dialogue," Forest Supervisor Tom Quinn said in a news release.

Quinn stressed the document is a draft – "not set in stone" – and that forest officials want to hear the public's views on motorized travel in the forest.

You guys gotta see this. Somebody sent me all 7 alternative maps in the mail. These are extremely detailed, showing every trail and dirt road in the forest system. I'm definately going to make the Nevada City and Auburn meetings. The first one is day after tomorrow. Sure would like to see MLDS come out in force. Let me know if you can make it. I can fit 4 of us in my truck.................Don F

I think I'm gonna be in on this one.  Sounds like someone is trying to sneak somthing by on us.   Anyone remember a place called Greenhorn Creek.  I hear that you used to be able to actually go there, but that could be an urban myth.

my wifes car can haul 8 MLDS riders or 54 Haitians.

I sure would like to get up there before 5:00 to talk to the planners. Looks like there's going to be a break between 5:00 and 6:30.  Maybe we could go eat during this break? Is anybody interested in meeting at 4:00 at starbucks parking lot off foresthill exit?

As it turns out, the meeting in Auburn on Oct. 9 will be the same presentation. There were  probably 200+ people, almost all were ohv users of some type. I had no idea how much clout individuals, clubs and organizations have in the final decisions of this process. It sounds like well written specific comments will actually make a difference. It is in all MLDS riders best interest to have input in this process as we know the Tahoe forest system fairly well, and with the maps they provided me, we can specify exactly what we want. If they know we represent a group, our clout is that much greater, so they say. It would be much better if we could all get together and go over these maps before the Auburn meeting. I can host a meeting at my house, or if anybody else who might be more centrally located, that would work too....................Don F
