Draft plan due for allowing motorized travel in forest

A draft environmental impact statement for a revamped road and trail system for motorized travel in Tahoe National Forest is expected to be released Sept. 26.
Open houses and orientation meetings are scheduled next month in Nevada City, Sierraville, Olympic Valley (for the Truckee/Tahoe area) and Auburn.
Large-scale maps and various displays will be available at the open houses from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and visitors will be able to talk with planning team members.
At the orientation meetings to follow from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., an overview of the travel management plan and draft EIS will be presented.
The open houses and meetings will be Oct. 1 at the Nevada City Elks Lodge, 518 Highway 49 North; Oct. 3, Sierraville Ranger Station, 317 S. Lincoln Highway (Highway 89); Oct. 7, Resort at Squaw Creek, 400 Squaw Creek Road, Olympic Valley; and Oct. 9, Ridge Golf Course, 2020 Golf Course Way, Auburn.
The environmental statement looks at which unauthorized trails, if any, will become part of the established route system; whether motorized cross-country travel should be prohibited; and whether changes are needed in the seasons of use or in the types of vehicles using the routes.
"We recognize this is a passionate topic, but hope we can all share in a constructive dialogue," Forest Supervisor Tom Quinn said in a news release.
Quinn stressed the document is a draft – "not set in stone" – and that forest officials want to hear the public's views on motorized travel in the forest.
